Designed and engineered by Newcomer Associates, the shaft replaces traditional masonry or concrete with prefabricated cross-laminated timber panels, maintaining required fire resistance while enabling a significantly faster install.. Glulam components were supplied by Rigid-Ply, with structural connections provided by Abbey Metals and Simpson Strong-Tie. Wright-Ryan Construction team served as both installer and general contractor, coordinating logistics for a seamless install.  

Early collaboration between the design, manufacturing, and install teams allowed the shaft to be optimized for CLT panel sizes, minimizing waste and reducing crane time. Pre-installed hardware streamlined field labor, and for a brief moment during construction, the exposed timber shaft brought a striking biophilic presence to the job site—showcasing how CLT can add value and efficiency even in conventionally framed buildings.
