Behind the Build: How Sterling Structural Turns Vision into Precision
At Sterling Structural, we make architects’ visions a reality with unprecedented precision, speed, and craftsmanship. But truly distinguishing us is the way we combine the newest technology with high levels of collaboration—translating raw lumber into elegant, efficient, constructible structures – and it all starts with design.
Our in-house design team works to turn conceptual building designs into extremely detailed 3D models and fabrication files. It’s more than geometry—every joint, opening, and connection is pre-designed to ensure architectural intent and reduce uncertainty in the field.
Once the digital files are finalized, our advanced fabrication team takes over. Using a fleet of smart tools—including our custom-built CR Onsrud 5-axis CNC machine, designed specifically to meet our needs—we cut, route, and drill each cross-laminated timber (CLT) panel with unmatched accuracy. This isn’t just automation—it’s customization.
Our CNC setup wasn’t off-the-shelf. It was developed from the ground up to support a fabrication process we’ve built in-house—tailored for today’s most ambitious mass timber projects. While many manufacturers adopt existing workflows, we’re defining our own, innovating from the inside out to push the boundaries of what’s possible with prefabrication.
The results speak for themselves:
– Faster installation
– Fewer delays
– Smarter coordination
– Designs that stay true from model to material
What really gets the entire thing going is the teamwork behind it. Our CNC operators work daily with our design team to identify challenges before it occurs, get the most out of panel layouts, and offer a seamless transition from virtual model to real-world reality. Whether single-family house kits or large-scale mixed-use buildings, this integrated system enables us to offer not just components—but complete solutions.
We don’t just build better at Sterling Structural. We build smarter – starting with the first line drawn to the last cut. And as we continue to develop our tools, technology, and teamwork, we’re proud to lead the way in bringing Mass Timber for the Masses to life.
